Granulated activated carbon

Granulated activated carbon is made from materials such as hard coal, coconut shells and wood, with each input material yielding different degrees of hardness, abrasion resistance and adsorption pore distribution. To determine which granulated activated carbon is best suited for a specific application, one compares the size of the adsorption pores and the size of the molecules to be adsorbed. Granulated activated carbon is supplied in specific grain sizes, with granulometric ranges for the main grain typically indicated in mesh scale (mesh density per unit of length) or directly in millimetres. The mesh and millimetre values are mutually convertible.

Grain over 0.12 mm in size is considered granulated activated carbon and grain sizes up to 5 mm are used in practice.

Parameters, such as iodine value, methylene blue value, molasses number and dechlorination half length value are provided for easy reference. As other factors affect the adsorption process (e.g. pH, surface polarity, competing adsorption or temperature), we advise that customers carry out laboratory or trial tests prior to application.
